- Overview
Far away from the noise and the urban agglomeration, from the struggle for survival in the city, somewhere in the Transylvanian area, on the Târnava Mare river, right in the Mureș county, lies medieval Sighișoara. Here time seems to have stood still. History whispers around every corner, the bright colours of the buildings play in tandem and the grand towers and mysterious gothic-style churches seem to welcome you into another world.
This place, thanks to its well-preserved architecture, is unique in Europe and the historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And no wonder. Sighisoara is a living imprint of what the Middle Ages meant. It dates (written) back to 1280, and since then Sighisoara Fortress has never stopped telling its story. At that time, the King of Hungary (Géza II) asked the Saxons to move to this part of the world to help him defend his borders. German craftsmen and artisans followed him, and what resulted is today a fairytale-like fortified town in the heart of Romania.
What's more, Sighisoara Fortress is also the birthplace of Vlad III (also known as Vlad the Impaler).
Obviously, Sighisoara preserves other stories too, which you can find in the museums dedicated to its history, some of them being the Clock Tower and a torture museum right next door. The place preserves medieval-German architecture and cultural heritage, which was preserved even during the communist period.
Take time to wander along the alleys of the Citadel, visit the museums and guild towers and enjoy coffee at the restaurants housed in the half-millennium-old buildings.
If you too are looking for such unique places from the top of the Citadel, you'll leave with a full heart!
