About
The Clock Tower in Sighisoara is a medieval tower built in the 14th century, which served as a watchtower and prison in the past. It is a popular tourist attraction and is considered one of the most recognizable landmarks of Sighisoara. The tower features a functional clock and a museum that showcases the history of Sighisoara and its fortress. Since 1898, the tower has housed the History Museum, where it is still located today.
The tower stands at a height of 64 meters, and visitors can climb to the top for a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings.
The Clock Tower in Sighisoara has a clock mechanism made in Switzerland, and the large bell strikes every hour. The original wooden clock mechanism was replaced with a metal one after the great fire of 1676. In 1677, the tower was restored, and wooden statues were added.
Among the most famous figures are the Goddess of Justice, Justice itself, the Drummer, and the Sunrise. Two cherubs symbolizing Day and Night mark the transition between day and night and change daily: at 6 AM, and at 6 PM, the transition to Night is marked by a cherub holding two lit candles.
This traditional way of telling the time adds to the charm and historical significance of the tower, making it an even more interesting attraction for tourists visiting Sighisoara.
The Clock Tower is considered a symbol of the rich cultural and historical heritage of Sighisoara and is a must-visit for tourists interested in exploring the city's rich past.
