About
The historic centre of the city, also known as the Old Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's best-preserved mediaeval towns.
As you walk through the old center's cobblestone streets, you'll be transported back to the 16th century, when the city was a vibrant cultural and commercial town. Many landmarks and architectural treasures may be seen in the Old Town, including Gothic-style churches, Baroque buildings, and colorful residences with finely carved wooden balconies.
One of the most iconic landmarks in the historic center is the Council Tower, a 13th-century tower that served as the main entrance to the city. You can climb to the top of the tower for a breathtaking view of the city and the surrounding mountains.
Another must-see attraction in Sibiu is the Brukenthal National Museum, one of the oldest and most important museums in Romania. Housed in a beautiful Baroque palace, the museum features an impressive collection of European art, as well as exhibits on Romanian history and culture.
Historic Centre (Centrul istoric) is home to many well-preserved medieval buildings, including the Evangelical Cathedral and the Roman Catholic Church.
The Liars' Bridge (Podul Mincinoșilor): This is a famous medieval bridge located in the heart of the Historic Centre. It is known for its ornate wrought-iron railings and the legend that if someone told a lie while standing on the bridge, it would shake.
The historic center of Sibiu is also known for its vibrant cultural scene, with numerous festivals and events taking place throughout the year. One of the most popular events is the Sibiu International Theater Festival, which attracts performers and visitors from around the world.
In addition to its cultural and historical attractions, the Old Town is also a great place to relax and soak up the atmosphere. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants, and bars where you can enjoy a traditional Romanian meal or a cup of coffee while watching the world go by.
If you're looking for a place to stay in the historic district, there are plenty of possibilities. You can choose between staying in a traditional hotel or guesthouse and staying in a modern apartment or hostel.
Overall, everyone interested in history, culture, or architecture should pay a visit to Sibiu's old center. Sibiu will captivate your heart and leave you wanting more with its gorgeous landmarks, thriving cultural scene, and lovely atmosphere.
