About
Harman Fortified Church, located near Brasov, is one of the most impressive and well-preserved medieval monuments in Transylvania. Built in the 13th century by the Saxon colonists, the church was fortified in the 15th century to withstand the Ottoman invasions and other threats.
The fortified church in Harman is a remarkable structure surrounded by a circular wall adorned with seven towers. The actual church showcases a captivating blend of architectural styles, featuring a Gothic choir, a Romanesque nave, a Renaissance altar, and pre-Reformation frescoes. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is not only a testament to the rich history and culture of Transylvania but also serves as a protective fortress with imposing defensive elements.
The circular walls, reaching up to 10-12 meters in height, include a wall walk with loopholes, complemented by seven towers standing at about 20 meters. The fortification, designed to shelter up to 800 locals, still retains some of the rooms built within the circular wall or directly on the outer wall of the church.
