About
Nestled in the rolling hills of Transylvania, the fortified church of St. Michael in Cisnădioara, Sibiu is a stunning example of medieval architecture and a must-see for anyone visiting the area. The church, which dates back to the 12th century, is located in the small village of Cisnădioara, about 12 kilometers outside of the city of Sibiu.
The church is situated on a hilltop and is surrounded by thick stone walls, which were built to protect the church and its inhabitants from invading forces. Visitors can walk along the walls and explore the area, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
The medieval stone walls that surround the basilica are 4-6 meters high on the outside and 2-3 meters high on the inside. The wall was built to protect the church and the villagers from invaders.
The church is known for its impressive acoustics, and concerts are sometimes held here.
You can reach the church by climbing up a stone path that leads to the entrance gate. Once you enter the fortified enclosure, you'll be amazed by the beauty and simplicity of the basilica, which has three naves and a semicircular apse. The most impressive feature is the western portal, which has a richly decorated arch. The portal is considered to be one of the finest examples of Romanesque art in Transylvania.
Inside the church, you can admire the original stone columns and arches. You can also see some of the large rocks that were used as weapons by the villagers during sieges. According to local tradition, every man who wanted to get married had to bring a rock up the hill and place it in the court of the church. This way, they ensured a constant supply of ammunition for their defense. Commemorative plaques display the names of German and Austro-Hungarian officers and soldiers who lost their lives in the battles around Sibiu in the autumn of 1916.
