About
Biserica Kretzulescu also known as Crețulescu Church, is located in the historic center of Bucharest, making it easily accessible for travelers. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or a seeker of spiritual experiences, this hidden gem is well worth a visit.
This is an Eastern Orthodox church built in Byzantine, Baroque, and Brâncovenesc style (a Romanian architectural style).
The church was built in 1720-1722 by Iordache Kretzulescu, a prominent figure of the time, and his wife Safta, a daughter of Constantin Brancoveanu, one of the most important rulers of Wallachia. Its construction took several years, and the final result is a harmonious synthesis of various influences, making it a visual delight for visitors.
The exterior of the church is made of brick, with elegant decorations on the façades. The interior is equally breathtaking, with ornate frescoes, meticulously painted icons, and a majestic dome that bathes the space in celestial light. As you step inside, the air becomes infused with a serene ambiance that invites reflection and contemplation.
The church was damaged during the 1940 earthquake, but was repaired in 1942–1943. In the early days of the communist regime, Biserica Kretzulescu was slated for demolition, but was saved due to efforts of architects such as Henriette Delavrancea-Gibory. More renovations took place after the Bucharest earthquake of 1977 and the Revolution of 1989. To the side of the church now stands a memorial bust of Corneliu Coposu, a prominent anti-communist politician.
Biserica Kretzulescu stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural diversity of Bucharest. Its captivating design and spiritual ambiance make it an enchanting destination for travelers seeking a glimpse into the city's past. Whether you're a lover of art, history, or simply in search of a serene haven, a visit to Biserica Kretzulescu promises an unforgettable experience, leaving you with cherished memories.
