About
The White Tower, or "Turnul Alb" in Romanian, is a formidable stone tower that dates back to the late 15th century. Its construction was commissioned by the city's guilds to fortify Brasov's defenses. The tower stands as a sentinel, overlooking the city and guarding its medieval charm.
The White Tower of Brasov is a symbol of the city's resilience and history. This iconic structure, perched atop one of Brasov's verdant hills, offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the city's rich history and offers panoramic views that will leave you breathless. With its distinctive conical roof, the tower bears a striking resemblance to a fairytale castle turret. The tower's whitewashed walls, from which it derives its name, glisten brilliantly in the sunlight, making it a beacon visible from far and wide.
The White Tower was built between 1460 and 1494 by the Saxons as part of the defensive system against the invading Turks and Tartars. It has a semicircular shape with a straight side facing the city, and it is connected to the Graft Bastion. The tower has five stories and its height ranges between 18 and 20 meters, depending on the ground level. The walls are four meters thick in the basement and have battlements, holes for pitch, and balconies that were used to attack the enemies.
The White Tower got its name from the whitewash that coated its walls. It was damaged by a fire in 1649, which also gave its name to the nearby Black Tower (Turnul Negru), which was blackened by the flames. The White Tower was restored in 1723 and several times until today.
Today, it is open to visitors who can climb up the steep steps to the top of the tower and enjoy a panoramic view of Brasov and its surroundings. The tower also hosts temporary exhibitions of local artists and craftsmen.
