About
The Black Church, or Biserica Neagră in Romanian, is a Gothic cathedral that dominates the picturesque town of Brasov. It's a masterpiece that has captivated travelers and locals alike for centuries and its imposing presence, intricate architecture, and rich history make it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a taste of Romania's past.
The Black Church was built in the late 14th century by the German community of Brasov, who called it the Church of Saint Mary. It replaced an older church that was destroyed by a Tatar invasion in 1242. The construction lasted for about a century, and was influenced by the Gothic style of Central Europe. The church has a length of 89 meters, a width of 37 meters, and a height of 65 meters. It can accommodate up to 5,000 people inside its spacious nave and choir.
The church got its current name after the Great Fire of 1689, which ravaged most of the town and left the church covered in black soot. The fire also damaged the roof, the windows, and the interior decorations. The church was restored in the 18th century, but it still bears the traces of the fire on its walls and pillars.
One of the most remarkable features of the Black Church is its organ, which is the largest mechanical organ in Romania and Eastern Europe It has 3993 pipes and was built in 1839 by Carl August Buchholz, a famous German organ builder. The organ is still functional and produces a magnificent sound. The church hosts regular organ concerts that attract music lovers from all over the world.
Another treasure of the Black Church is its collection of Anatolian carpets, which is the largest outside Turkey. The carpets were donated by the local merchants who traded with the Ottoman Empire in the 17th and 18th centuries. The carpets are displayed on the walls and benches of the church, creating a striking contrast with the Gothic architecture. The carpets have various patterns and colors, and some of them are very rare and valuable.
If you want to learn more about the history and culture of Brasov and Transylvania, you should not miss the opportunity to visit the Black Church. It is located in the heart of the old town, near the Council Square.
